Notes in the Margins is designed to stay quiet while you work. Here is what to know about notes, source links, privacy, and getting unstuck.
01Where are my notes saved?
Your notes and source links are saved in Chrome’s local extension storage on this computer. Notes in the Margins does not currently connect to an account, cloud drive, or syncing service. Export anything important before uninstalling the extension, since Chrome removes local extension data when an extension is removed.
02What is the difference between a page note and a site note?
Every page path gets its own note, while the site note stays available across the current domain. For example, /pricing and /about have separate page notes. On the site’s root page, the site note becomes the main writing space.
03Do filters, sorting, or slide-out panels create new notes?
Not when they only change the URL query or hash. Those variations share one page note, while genuinely different paths keep separate notes. A source link still remembers the exact URL where it was created, including query and hash details, so it can restore that view when possible.
04How do source links work?
Select text on a webpage, then attach it to a paragraph, heading, list item, or task in your page note. The extension saves the quote, a small amount of nearby context, and its capture URL. Open the source marker later to return to that route, find the text, and briefly highlight it. If the page has changed and the text cannot be found, your note stays intact and the marker reports that the source is unavailable.
05Can I use regular Markdown?
Yes. The editor presents clean rich text while preserving portable Markdown underneath. Common shortcuts create headings, bullets, numbered lists, task items, bold text, italics, and links. Copy or export one note, or export all saved notes for a site as one .md file.
06Why does the extension request access to webpages and tabs?
Notes in the Margins uses the active tab’s URL and title to choose the right page or site note. Page access lets it capture text you deliberately select, save a small amount of nearby context, and find and highlight that source later. The current version keeps notes and captured selections in local Chrome extension storage.
07Where can I use Notes in the Margins?
It supports Chrome 114 or newer on ordinary HTTP and HTTPS webpages. Chrome’s internal pages are not supported, and the first anchor version cannot capture text inside cross-origin frames. If selection tools do not appear immediately after installing or updating, refresh the webpage and reopen the side panel.
