About this policy

This policy explains how the Notes in the Margins Chrome extension and its public product website handle information. The extension is published by Witchcraftery. It is a local-first writing tool for page-specific notes, site-wide notes, Markdown tasks, and optional links to text selected on a webpage.

Information the extension handles

Page context

The extension reads the active tab’s URL and page title to show the correct page note and site note. Page-note identity uses the page origin and path. Query parameters and hash fragments do not create separate notes.

Notes and tasks

The extension stores the Markdown notes, task state, note scope, labels, and timestamps that you create. An empty editor is temporary and is not saved as a note record.

Text-selection anchors

When you choose to attach selected webpage text to a note, the extension stores the selected quote, a small amount of text before and after it, the exact capture URL, a best-effort page location descriptor, internal note-block identifiers, and the creation time. The exact capture URL can include query parameters or a hash so the extension can try to restore that page state.

Temporary selections

While text is selected on a page, the extension may process that selection inside Chrome to offer the attachment workflow. It does not save the selection as an anchor unless you choose to attach it.

How the information is used

The extension uses this information only to:

• show the right page note and site note for the active tab;
• save and organize the notes and tasks you create;
• return to an anchored page state and highlight matching source text when you request it; and
• copy or export Markdown when you activate those controls.

The extension does not use this information for advertising, profiling, credit decisions, or purposes unrelated to its note and source-link features.

Storage, retention, and deletion

Notes and anchors are stored in chrome.storage.localwithin your Chrome profile on this device. The extension does not use Chrome Sync and does not provide a cloud backup.

A saved note remains until you clear its content, clear the extension’s local data in Chrome, or uninstall the extension. Clearing a note removes that note record. To remove all locally stored notes and anchor records, clear the extension’s local data or uninstall it. Because there is no server copy, Witchcraftery cannot retrieve or restore deleted notes.

Export anything important before uninstalling the extension. Chrome removes extension-local storage when an extension is removed.

Sharing and transmission

The extension does not transmit notes, page URLs, titles, selected quotes, or anchor context to Witchcraftery, analytics providers, advertisers, or other third parties. It does not sell user data.

Copy and export are user-directed actions. Copy places Markdown on your system clipboard. Export creates a local Markdown file. If you later paste, upload, or share that content with another app or service, that destination’s privacy terms apply.

Why the Chrome permissions are needed

Side panel

Displays the writing and domain-overview interface beside the webpage you are reviewing.

Storage

Saves non-empty notes, task state, page and domain context, and anchor records locally in Chrome.

Tabs

Reads the active tab’s URL and title, follows navigation so the displayed note stays current, and restores a captured URL when you request an anchored source. The extension does not access Chrome’s browsing-history API.

Ordinary webpages

Runs a content script on HTTP and HTTPS pages so you can attach intentionally selected text and later scroll to and highlight it. Broad site access is necessary because the extension is designed to work on websites you choose.

The extension bundles its executable code locally and does not execute remotely hosted code.

The website and support email

The public Notes in the Margins website has no account system, contact form, or Witchcraftery-controlled analytics. As with most websites, its hosting infrastructure may process standard request information such as IP address, browser details, timestamps, and security logs to deliver and protect the site.

The website embeds a YouTube video using YouTube’s privacy-enhanced domain. Loading or playing that video may allow Google or YouTube to process device, network, and interaction information under the Google Privacy Policy. The extension itself does not contain this video or send note data to YouTube.

If you email support, Witchcraftery receives your email address and message and uses them to answer your request and maintain the support conversation. Please do not send passwords, private page content, or sensitive note text. You may request deletion of a support conversation by emailing the address below.

Chrome Web Store Limited Use commitment

Notes in the Margins’ use of information complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Information is used only to provide or improve the extension’s disclosed single purpose. It is not sold, used for personalized advertising, or used for lending or credit decisions.

Changes to this policy

If the extension’s data practices change, this policy and the Chrome Web Store disclosures will be updated before the new practices take effect. Material changes will also be disclosed to users as required by Chrome Web Store policy.
